Intro [12 Dec 2003|09:39am]
I’m writing this for you, Siobhan, to help you understand your Daddy. Not that I pretend to understand myself.
Youth believes in itself. As youths, we define ourselves in terms of our own individuality. We define ourselves in terms of the things that make us different from our parents and those around us. You will notice that as we age, we start to identify ourselves more as a product of our families and our circumstances. I believe this to be a natural consequence of the process of maturing and of living.
I never understood my father and seriously doubt that he ever understood himself. I don’t remember that we ever got along. I don’t think he liked me very much. I know now that I will never understand him and, as such, my ability to understand myself is proportionally diminished.
I don’t want this to happen to you. This journal will have to serve as the story of your father. It is my story as I see it. If something should happen to me, I want you to have at least this by way of explanation. I know it’s not much but, sometimes, that’s all we have.
